Truck driving can be one of the most monotonous jobs out there. And for some, staying entertained during a typical 12-14 hour driving shift can be a hard task. Finding hobbies isn’t always the easiest thing to do either when you have your hands at 10 and 2 for the better part of the day. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Here are a couple of hobbies for truck drivers to do while on the road to keep themselves sane.

Hobbies for Truck Drivers

Now, obviously having hobbies for truck drivers doesn’t make sense if they can’t actually participate in the hobby. But it’s actually a lot simpler to have a (safe) hobby while you’re driving than you think. Below we’ll take a look at some of the most rewarding hobbies for truckers that are available.

Audio Books– Having a book on tape is an extremely beneficial way to entertain yourself driving since you obviously can’t (and shouldn’t) read while you drive. Audiobooks are a fun and easy way to put the miles behind you on your next scheduled route. You can find the novel perfect for you on sites like Audiobooks.com, Audible.com, and SimplyAudioBooks.com. Most of these sites also offer up to a one-month free trial!

Podcasts – This might come as a surprise, but the CB is dead. But, there’s still a way you can listen to fellow truckers. Podcasts are a great tool for hands-free hobbies for truck drivers. There are so many podcasts out there for the industry, or about any subject you could imagine. And even better, most are free! Podbay.fm is one of the top free podcast sites out there, so listen away! We consider this one of the best hobbies for truckers because you can learn, laugh, and enjoy your time on the road with podcasts.

Learn a Language – You always wanted to, now’s your chance! Everyone always says learning a language takes time, and as a truck driver, you’ve got plenty. There are many great programs to choose from; whether its Spanish, French, German, or Chinese, it’s as simple as popping in a cd or auxiliary cord.

Youtubing – A quick search on the popular video site will reveal literally hundreds of truck drivers who like stream video of themselves talking about his or her day. Video diaries have been a growing hobby for many truckers who just want to talk about what it’s like being on the road. Some have even amassed thousands of followers and the community is very welcoming.

Out of the Cab

For times when you need a break sitting in your cab doing nothing for hours, there are hobbies for when you pull up to the truck stop.

Exercise – This is certainly one of the most productive ways to spend your free time when it comes to hobbies for truckers. Whether you’re looking to lose weight or just wanted to stretch your legs, working out is a great hobby to pick up during your daily routine. Going for a brisk jog or light walk around the truck stop, or finding time for some lunges is a great way to relieve back pain and relieve any stress before you climb back into the cab to hit the road.

Knitting – Okay, now I know most of you probably shook your head at this one. And yes, it does seem “out there.” But knitting, and even quilting, has become a growing hobby among truck drivers. Drivers who have more time on their hands can focus on making something nice when their days seem dull and boring from the road. And don’t be afraid of knitting being a “girly” hobby. Wave that freshly quilted cabin blanket high. Drivers in the winter will wish they had one too.

Photography – Driving through several states in a day can take you to some pretty breathtaking locations. Some drivers find relief from the road in taking pictures. And whether you own a fancy digital camera or just use your smartphone, taking a snap of where you’ve been can be relaxing. Having a photograph of a sunset in the desert, or even a rainbow over your usual gritty truck stop can help associate your travels with something beautiful.

Playing a Sport – Whether you’re finding a pick-up basketball game at a local park, or stopping by the town bowling alley, finding a sport to play is one of the best hobbies for truckers. Not only is it a great form of exercise, but you’ll often make new friends while playing. There’s nothing better than staying active and meeting new people.

Those are just a few of the many ways that you can find a hobby to fill up your time on the road. What are some other activities you prefer? Comment below and tell us your favorite hobbies for truck drivers.
