What is Intermodal Trucking?<\/h2>\n

Intermodal trucking involves the transportation of an intermodal containing freight that can be transported via ship, train, truck, or other modes of transportation. The containers are durable, constructed of steel and built so that they can be transferred between the different modes of transportation. These are the large, rectangular containers you could find on many loading docks and shipping ports. They\u2019re designed to handle any type of weather and be portable enough to travel on a variety of different vehicles.<\/p>\n

The bookends of intermodal tend to be rail and ocean segments; but in between, trucking is frequently used to connect them. Commonly referred to as drayage, the specialized trucking that runs between ocean ports, rail terminals, and inland shipping docks are typically provided by\u00a0dedicated companies.<\/a> <\/u><\/p>\n

For example, an intermodal trucker might be asked to pick up a supply of freight from a shipyard. This equipment would then be loaded with freight and taken by truck to a railroad yard. The loaded equipment would be put onto a train and railed to its destination, taken off the train and finally delivered by truck to the customer. Intermodal trucks essentially connect the dots for major transportations and keep things running smoothly.<\/p>\n

One of the biggest perks to being an intermodal trucker is that you can work relatively normal hours. You\u2019ll be able to work close to home and be able to come home to your family on nights and weekends. You\u2019ll work the same hours that the workers in shipyards and railroads work, which are typically the traditional 9 to 5. This will give you the ability to spend more time at home and give you a proper work\/life balance.<\/p>\n

No Waiting and Easier Maintenance<\/h3>\n

One of the great advantages of intermodal trucking is the ability to use local shops to maintain your rig. You\u2019ll be able to remain close to home while your vehicle is worked on. You also won\u2019t be stuck waiting around for days until your haul gets unloaded. Since you\u2019re working locally, offload times are quick and easy, and almost all trips are done within the day. Again, this is a great career for those want to stay at home with the family.<\/p>\n

You might be wondering how intermodal transportation actually helps to combat the shortage. Well, intermodal transportation chains reduce the number of trucks needed to haul freight. One intermodal train takes about 300 long-haul trucks off of our crowded\u00a0highways.
