Just like taking care of your rig, you need to maintain the health of your body so you can stay in it for the long haul. While it can be tough to maintain a healthy lifestyle while on the road, there are a variety of ways you can make sure you’re eating properly and getting exercise. It’s time to make some health resolutions for 2017, and here are a few to get you started on the right path towards better health.

4 Health Resolutions For Truckers

1. Develop A Relationship With Your Doctor

It can be tough on the road to find time for routine checkups with your family doctor, but there are a few things you can do to maintain contact with them while you’re on the road. Set goals with them that you can work to accomplish. For example, maybe your doctor noticed that your blood pressure has been high. They might encourage you to monitor it while you’re on the road and report back to them if it continues to stay high.

Doctors can also answer non-life threatening medical questions while you’re on the road. They’ll have recommendations on which over-the-counter cold medicine to purchase as well as ways to get a better night’s sleep on the road. But, if you have a medical emergency that is more serious, make sure to go to the hospital or call 911 if you are unable to make it there.

2. Get Some Exercise

We know it can be tough to stay active while spending most of your day in your rig, but exercise can help reduce numerous health conditions and will make you feel better mentally. Physical activity releases endorphins, which can increase your mood, making a long route a little less stressful.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity at least five days a week for a total of 150 minutes per week. We realize this can be difficult to do while on the road so often, but it’s still important to get as much exercise as you can. Performing light aerobic exercise at rest stops, or even taking a walk around the area can help lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, and increase overall health. These health resolutions should keep you trucking for the years to come.

3. Eat Healthier

One of the most popular health resolutions for truckers, eating healthier can be harder than it sounds for many who spend their life on the road. It’s no surprise that fast food and truck stop snacks don’t provide substantial nutritional value. If you can, try to cook meals in your rig that provide nutritional value and taste good. If you don’t know a lot of recipes, there’s no shortage of apps that curate recipes and even group recipes based on certain dietary considerations, like diabetes or high blood pressure.

If you’re unable to cook in your rig, keep an eye out for healthier options on the road. Trail mix and granola are always great alternatives to chips and beef jerky. Soda is also a major issue for many truckers looking for a little boost during the day. Soda can lead to diabetes and a variety of other ailments, so try to drink more water or juice while on the road. These are just a few ways to maintain a healthy diet while traveling the country.

4. Keep In Touch With Home

Let’s not forget about taking care of our mental health. It can get very lonely on the road, so another health resolution to add to your list should be to maintain a connection with loved ones at home. A call to home can be just the thing you need to get through a grueling journey. You might even be able to video chat while on the road so you can see the faces of your friends and family.

Make sure to decorate your rig with pictures and trinkets that will remind you of home. It’s important to focus on not only your physical health but mental health as well. These are just a few health resolutions to make so 2017 can be your best year ever.

What other health resolutions do you recommend?
