Brake Safety Week is well underway this week and the CVSA (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance)<\/a> is urging truckers to get their brakes in tiptop shape. During Brake Safety Week, the CVSA will work with law enforcement agencies across the country to make sure your brakes are up to par. Starting\u00a0September 11th and continuing through September 17th inspectors will be looking for\u00a0out-of-adjustment brakes, brake-system, and anti-lock braking system (ABS) violations as a part of brake safety week.<\/p>\n

Brake Dangers<\/strong><\/h2>\n

About 130,000 individuals are injured each year in truck collisions. This alarming statistic shows just how much of an influence your big rig has on the roadways. Throughout Brake Safety Week, inspectors will be performing hundreds of roadside inspections, so it\u2019s important to make sure your vehicle meets the proper criteria<\/a>. According to the CVSA, brake-related violations comprised the largest percentage (43 percent) of all out-of-service violations cited during Operation Airbrake\u2019s companion International Roadcheck campaign in 2015. Just looking at one state, during Brake Safety Week in California in 2015, 4,909 trucks and motorcoaches were inspected and 897 were taken out of service because of brakes and other issues.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t want to put yourself, or others in danger, so it\u2019s time to get your brakes in check.<\/p>\n

Brake Maintenance<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Earlier this year,\u00a0we talked about the importance of brake maintenance<\/a> and some tips to keeping your brakes ready to stop on a dime.<\/p>\n

Pre-Inspection <\/strong>\u2013 It\u2019s important to look over your brakes yourself, looking for signs of rust, or other types of moisture damage. Oil stains or rust streaks could also be signs that it\u2019s time for some new brake pads. Loose or hanging parts could also be detrimental to your vehicle since they could get caught in the road.<\/p>\n

Brake Pad Inspection <\/strong>\u2013 It\u2019s also important to check the thickness of your pads to identify if they need replaced. You can also tell by driving the vehicle and listening for any grinding or squeaking coming from the wheel area. Rotors should also be inspected a few times a year for cracks.<\/p>\n

Brake Safety Week Importance<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The CVSA originally created Brake Safety Week as a way to ensure that drivers are acknowledging the importance of maintaining their brakes. About 98 percent of all semi accidents result in at least one fatality. It\u2019s no secret that a big rig can be a dangerous contraption, and that alarming statistic shows just how dangerous they can be.
