We\u2019ve all heard it before: life on the open road can get lonely for truckers. If you haven\u2019t already found love by the time you become a truck driver, it may be hard to ever find it. Last year, we talked about some of the perks of online dating for truckers<\/a> and a lot of our readers’ comments demonstrated just how hard it is to find a good relationships when you\u2019re on the road.<\/p>\n

Why is it that, in the trucking industry, the same people that are able to keep the entire country going are not able to keep their relationships going, or have trouble finding a partner at all?<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s explore some of the reasons that truck drivers have a hard time finding the \u201cone\u201d, and for the ones that have found their match, we\u2019ll look at some of the ways they keep the romance alive.<\/p>\n

There are many reasons why truck drivers have trouble finding their perfect match, and it’s not their fault. Relationships are hard for anyone, but especially a trucker. If you are thinking about dating a trucker, there are some factors you want to consider.<\/p>\n

Long-haul truckers are on the road for days or even weeks at a time. Even if they are coming home weekly or monthly, with all the time away, it can feel like you are in a long distance relationship.<\/p>\n

There may be times that you will not be able to talk to your trucker because their sleep schedule may be different than yours, or maybe they are in an area of the country with no cell phone reception.<\/p>\n

Irregular schedules<\/h3>\n

Another thing that makes being in a relationship with a trucker is that you cannot necessarily schedule events with them. Most truckers are on irregular schedules; coming and going at different times of the day, week, and month.<\/p>\n

For truckers with families, it can be even more difficult. Even if they want to be there, truckers may miss some important happenings like graduations, or recitals. Trust is an issue for many couples that get to see each other every day. Sometimes, people who date long-haul drivers fear that their trucker will also date other people in various towns on their routes.<\/p>\n

And we\u2019ve all heard the stories about truck stop prostitution. I mean there’s a documentary about it<\/a>, and w<\/em>e<\/em> even wrote about \u201clot lizards<\/a>\u201d last July. Also known as \u2018pavement princesses\u2019 or \u2018male buffalos\u2019 in the case of male prostitutes, they have been known to lurk at truck stops, going from truck to truck searching for lonely drivers looking for a good time.<\/p>\n

And what about the people at home while their trucker is on the road? They could also be having a relationship on the side. Truckers and their significant others need to fully trust each other if they want to make their relationship work.<\/p>\n

Reality of the trucking lifestyle<\/h3>\n

Truckers lead a stressful and generally unhealthy lifestyle. They are responsible for safely transporting thousands of pounds of goods, which is demanding enough. But truckers also have constantly changing sleep schedules that depend on their pick up and delivery times.<\/p>\n

Trucker\u2019s aren\u2019t always able to shower daily on the road. That feeling of clean is something that non-truckers may take for granted. Truckers also have trouble finding healthy eating and exercise options. A whopping 70 percent of truckers are obese, and drivers are twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes.<\/p>\n

Again, the trucker is not to blame for this. It is the reality of the industry, and all of these factors can take a toll on a trucker physically, mentally, and emotionally, making it hard for them to nurture relationships.<\/p>\n
