The problem of calculating freight rates quickly may just be a thing of the past with some of the great apps available now for carriers. With just a few waves of your pointer-finger, you can optimize your transportation efforts in an ever-increasingly paperless world. And, the Silcon Valley has definitely started to notice. After all, arranging cargo shipments is a $160-billion-a-year industry….(and historically been a huge pain in the butt.)

A recent survey put the average quoting time from top forwarders at an average of 91 hours. With the innovation and technology available to us in apps in every other faucet of our lives, the future of logistics is definitely nigh (if not already here.)

uShip

uShip is a revolutionary freight marketplace where American truck drivers can often fill space in their trucks through bidding on consumer shipments. Carriers can find loads online with no subscription fees.

VeriTread

Dubbed the “heavy-hauler marketplace,” VeriTread connects transportation providers and shipping customers together with cost-cutting and time-trimming online tools. “We believe that by enhancing existing relationships, improving the accuracy of information, and reducing overall uncertainty, we will produce a better transportation experience for the benefit of all,” their website says.

Cargomatic

What happens what a Silicon Valley software developer meets a trucking veteran? A great trucking app.

“By seamlessly connecting shippers and carriers through our web and mobile apps, we’re helping truckers grow their businesses and shippers track their freight in real time,” their website reads.

Freight Filter

It’s 1, 2, 3—GO when you use Freight Filter. They provide carrier assistance for road, land and sea. They help you get pricing instantly no matter what time of day, help you book quickly online (with help from your very own account manager), and help ship faster. According to their website, 1 million tons are moved by their network each month.

Shipster

Available currently in New York City and San Fransisco, Shipster is helping provide on-demand transportation solutions. Businesses and individuals can use this app (in covered areas) to get cheap and simple deliveries made. This app, which has been featured in the likes of ABC’s Morning Show and Mashable, offers a service that can help move items locally and arrive in about the same time as a pizza. They allow both personal deliveries or transportation companies to join in this “Uber-like” idea.

Buddytruk

Similiar to Shipster, but for the Austin, Los Angeles, Orange County and Chicago areas; Buddytruk helps people and businesses get their items shipped or moved in a breeze.

Freightos

Logistics technology company, Freightos has recently launched their $14 million startup that helps freight forwarders manage their routes and pricing replacing the old-fashioned Excel and PDF slow quote style.

“The Freightos vision is to bring international freight shipping online, providing instant online freight quotes for logistics providers (like CEVA Logistics or Nippon Express) or shippers (including Marks & Spencer and Sysco),” Eytan Buchman, head of Freightos’ marketing told AllTruckJobs.com in an email.

According to Buchman, there are a couple core differences between Freightos and other competitors. For one, they are a company “built bottom-up to support instant, door-to-door freight quotes, not just air or ocean legs.” Additionally, they allow multiple logistics companies to share freight rates with one another or let shippers compare freight quotes from several forwarders ultimately an advantage.  Their CEO, Zvi Schreiber, an entrepreneur who has sold companies to IBM and General Electric in the past, hopes that Freightos will continue to “encourage transparency in the trillion dollar freight market.”
